Vertebral fractures caused by osteoporosis impair freedom of movement and contribute to the formation of hunched backs. Spinomed® back orthoses from medi® are used as part of osteoporosis therapy. They are effective aids in straightening up the spinal column according to the “biofeedback” principle and in training the muscles.
How Can Osteoporosis Be Treated?
With comprehensive, functional treatment
“In order to allow for low-pain mobilization, the supply of a spinal orthosis should be considered.”1
Due to the close link between muscle and bone, loss of bone and muscle mass always occur at the same time. Once fractures have occurred in the spine, treatment with drugs must always be accompanied by treatment with medical devices because fractures cause pain and further loss of muscle mass due to restricted mobility.
medi has developed the orthoses Spinomed and Spinomed Active together with Prof. Helmut W. Minne, M.D. to promote mobility in patients with osteoporosis. These orthopedic devices straighten the vertebral column while simultaneously training the muscles. The Spinomed orthosis is as easy to put on and take off as a backpack.1DVO eV, 2017
Osteoporosis therapy made easy with real solutions
Spinomed’s strap system and back brace
Orthoses exert controlled tension on the pelvis and shoulder region. Thanks to the more erect posture, patients find it far easier to breathe deeply again. Pain is relieved and muscle is demonstratively strengthened. The back pad and the shoulder straps exert gentle pressure as soon as the back starts to slump. The patient involuntarily uses their own muscle power to straighten up and avoid this pressure. Certified Prosthetists/Orthotists (CPOs) in surgical suppliers mold the back brace in the Spinomed orthosis exactly to the contour of the spinal column.
Biofeedback principle
Spinomed back braces start strengthening the muscles as soon as they are put on. In contrast to standard braces, they activate the muscles of the back and abdomen. As a result, the torso is kept permanently straight. Together with the back splint, the elastic stretch materials exert noticeable tension forces on the pelvic and shoulder areas. If patients slump into a faulty posture, their braces automatically exert gentle pressure to remind them of the correct posture. This process is called biofeedback.
Clinically Proven
The Spinomed has been proven, in a published, peer-reviewed, evidence-based study, to:
- Strengthen the back and abdominal muscles within six months (by up to 72% and 56%)
- Reduce pain by up to 47%
- Reduce the angle of kyphosis by up to 11%
- Reduce the tendency to sway (by up to 23%)
